Once you have entered Thailand with a Non-Immigrant Visa Category “O,” you can apply for a one-year retirement visa extension at the Immigration Bureau in Thailand. This extension allows you to stay in the country for an additional year without the need to leave. These are non-immigration O extension requirements
● Must be aged 50 years or older.
● Passport (copies of each page with signature)
● Non-Immigrant Visa Category O
● TM30 receipt
● Evidence of meeting Financial Criteria such as bank statement (for income verification)
● Income Certification from the embassy in Thailand (applicant’s country of origin)
● Thai Bank Passbook displaying deposit account (original)
● Official letter from your Thai Bank (certificate signed by a bank officer)
● Three (3) photos sized 4×5 cm, with full-face taken within the last 6 months. Proof of long-term
● residence in Thailand such as a lease or rental agreement.
There is often confusion between the terms "Extension of Stay" and "Re-entry Permit." Though they are sometimes mistaken for each other, it's important to recognize that these are distinct concepts, both necessary during your stay in Thailand.
The Extension of Stay sets the duration for your period of residence. All other permissions hinge upon this. When your Extension of Stay expires, all associated privileges become void. Typically, an Extension of Stay is valid for one year. Conversely, the validity of a Re-entry Permit is contingent upon your Extension of Stay. Not obtaining a re-entry permit before leaving Thailand automatically cancels your Extension of Stay or period of residence.
For holders of the Thailand Retirement Visa, the Re-entry Permit offers two options:
● Single entry (1,000 THB)
● Multiple entries (3,800 THB)
Applications for a re-entry permit are processed at designated counters before Passport Control in Thai airports, where Immigration Officers are stationed for handling such requests.
Visitors must check in with the Immigration Bureau every 90 days if they have a prolonged extension of residence. Those with a multiple entry visa can exit Thailand and renew their residence extension after each 90-day entry. Reporting can be done either in person or via the internet.
If you are unable to extend your stay within Thailand, you will need to obtain a fresh non-immigrant O visa from a Thai Embassy or Consulate overseas.
If your partner also intends to retire in Thailand and is not a citizen of Thailand, and meets all the aforementioned eligibility criteria, they can qualify for the Thai Retirement Visa.
